Gleadell Street Market Supporters

The City of Yarra conducted a consultation about Gleadell Street in 2022 which may affect the Saturday Market sometime in the future. We want market supporters to be part of any such plans.

If you have received a Market Supporter Card please keep it so you can be part of the Startup group. Always use the QR code to find updates.

Now read on to find out more.

1. After the 150th anniversary celebration finishes in November you need to revisit this website to find out the next steps.

This will be your chance to participate if Council wants to make changes, you can use your card to join the discussion.

2. The Startup group will set goals, such as how to protect the market, whilst involving the stallholders and looking after regular shoppers.

A start point might be “to make sure the market stays a place where all people from Richmond and nearby can access their weekly fresh food supplies”.

REMEMBER : FIRST WE MUST ALWAYS PROTECT THE 150 YEAR OLD GLEADELL STREET MARKET

SECOND: IT MUST ALWAYS BE POSSIBLE FOR YOU TO GET TO THE STREET; WHETHER IT’S FOR  BOWLING CLUB,  TWO SCHOOLS, CITIZENS PARK SPORTS, DOG WALKING, REC CENTRE, LEO BERRY GYM, NEUMA CHURCH, CHILDCARE, BASKETBALL COURTS, ETC

In 2021 LEGS -(Let’s Enhance Gleadell Street) asked Melbourne Uni Masters students  to come up with ideas for the community around Gleadell Street in Richmond, Victoria.

Their task – to present ideas for the people of Richmond to test the ‘community hub’ vibe.

You can watch and rate these ideas.

Which idea could work for you?

Ask your friends too.

1. The Gleadell Puzzle

This proposal seeks to create a child-friendly and educational ‘grand park’. They want to capitalise on the local cultural diversity and artistic appeal to transform Gleadell Street into a vibrant and attractive community hub. The project combines functions as puzzle pieces to form diverse areas. It also asks participants to act as Puzzlers participating in the creation of activities within the puzzles.

2. Gleadell Community Hub

This project envisions Gleadell St as a testing ground for green infrastructure and nature restoration. It gradually transforms the street from the current car-dominated landscape into a place where human and natural environments are celebrated. A series of interventions across time aim to support community’s connection to nature and develop stewardship strategies.

3. Gleadell Street Square

This proposal seeks to transform Gleadell Street into a green and safe event space. They envision the street and its surrounding areas as a public hub where people meet.

4. Destination Gleadell

Establishing Gleadell Street as a network of destinations rather than a through-road, this projects invites people to gather and share with each other and with the wider community.

5. Create Great Links

This project creates uses greenery to connect the dynamic nature of the Gleadell St with the creation of areas to linger and stay. Using community gardens, slow-streets and other greening strategies, this project asks us to envision the street as a pedestrian street.

6. Playing, Connecting, Thriving

This proposal aims to deliver a child-friendly city. It will attract people and invite the community to play and remember the joy of being a child.

7. Love has no labels

This proposal aims to support inclusiveness of disadvantaged groups. By creating a loveable community, the visibility of the community is enhanced and the venue has more development prospects.

8. Urban Rhythms of Richmond

This proposal invites the local community to enjoy a multi-sensory journey around Citizen Park and Gleadell Street. It envisions the area as a place where everyone is welcome to gather, perform, learn and connect with nature, culture and the wider community.

9. Coming of Age Through Country

This project aims to support ‘at-risk’ youth as they mature. The project aspires to facilitate bodily engagement expressed through the Indigenous concept of songlines. An education program delivered by Indigenous members can support students connect to Country by walking, talking and becoming Country.

10. (Art)venture

This proposal invites community to explore Richmond through a series of themed trails that celebrate the natural and cultural heritage of Richmond. Meandering through these trails, you can use QR codes to read stories of the community or engage with periodically changing artwork. Then, you are invited to celebrate your personal relationship to Richmond by participating in a temporary transformation of Gleadell St. as an Artistic Hub.

#TownSquareinaStreet

LEGS is an acronym for Let’s Enhance Gleadell Street. We’re a group of local residents, not political, but engaged with getting the community voice heard. We are LEGS Association Inc. and as a formal association we can engage government and council more effectively, arrange events and seek funding for improving open space for people.

We want Gleadell Street to be a shared community space. It is the fresh food market “where Richmond meets” on Saturday every week. Based on petitions of 100s off local people this is and ideal spot for a civic hub where people meet “every day”.

“…like a town square…but a street…”

The City of Yarra shares the vision for a Civic Precinct, which they approved in their Bridge Road Streetscape Master Plan.
